What It’s Like to Be a Black Girl by Patricia Smith Essay Example for Free

What Its Like to Be a Black Girl by Patricia Smith EssayComparison of What its like to be a black girl and Country Lovers Many people dont control just how far support African American Literature dates back to, it really started back in the 18th century. These types of scripts have a tendency to concentrate on topics of racism, inner struggles, slavery, prejudice, and the quest of sovereignty as well as equality. The two well-known writers on this subject matter are Nadine Gordimer and Patricia Smith. During the course of this paper, actualities of the short storey Country Lovers, by Nadine Gordimer and the poem, What its Like to Be a Black Girl, by Patricia Smith, will be associated and compared to each other in respects to form, style, and content. When reading this short story and poem, the reader will come to realize that both of the main characters are the protagonist black females, only because they both have to deal with judgement from others because of who they are ba sed on their race or the color of their skin. In the short story entitled Country Lovers which was written by Nadine Gordimer in 1975 (Clugston, 2010), is most a prohibited love amongst a boyish black girl named Thebedi and a young white boy named Paulus Eysendyck. The two leading characters Paulus and Thebedi were raised up together since they were little children. The two of them frolicked together and consumed frequently of their juvenile days with angiotensin converting enzyme another. Time passed, they begin to mature, and they became detached from each other. As the two children became older, they realized that could not be seen in public together, for the lawsuit of race and their family status in the community. During the course of this short story there are numerous dramaturgical effects. The first takes place when the narrator talks ab tabu Paulus going away to school This usefully coincides with the age of twelve or thirteen so that by the time spindlely adolescence is reached, the black children are devising along with the bodily changes common to all, an easy transition to adult forms of address, beginning to call their old playmates missus and baasie little master (Clugston, 2010). Though, the connection formed among them as youngsters was still present, neither Paulus or Thebedis parents not once banned them from hanging out with one another, but there was constantly this silent ken that they both recognized it to be immoral, since they constantly seemed to be disguise or fabricate the fact that they did spend a lot of time together.A sample distribution of this is when Paulus arrived home from school and gave Thebedi a gift. She told her father the missus had given them to her as a reward for some works she had done-it was true she sometimes was called to help out in the farmhouse. She told the girls in the kraal that she had a sweetheart nobody knew about, tat away, away on another farm, and they giggled, and teased, and admired her. T here was a boy in the kraal called Njabulo who give tongue to he wished he could have brought her a belt and earrings (Clugston, 2010). As the story continues the reader will see the damage of the loss of rectitude and prohibited love, as expressed here when Paulus takes notice of Thebedi as she splash in the water The schoolgirls he went swimming with at dams or pools on close farms wore bikinis but the sight of their dazzling bellies and thighs in the sunlight had n eer made him feel what he felt now when the girl came up the bank and sit beside him, the drops of water beading off her dark legs the only points of light in the earthsmelling deep shade. They were not afraid of one another, they had known one another always he did with her what he had done that time in the storeroom at the wedding, and this time it was so lovely, so lovely, he was surprise . . . and she was surprised by it, toohe could see in her dark face that was take up of the shade, with her big dark eyes, shi ny as soft water, watching him attentively as she had when they used to huddle over their teams of mud oxen, as she had when he told her about detention weekends at school. (Clugston, 2010). The reader gets a taste of how bad secernment can be just before the end of this short story, when Paulus Eysendyck comes home from the veterinary college for the holiday season. This is when he discovers Thebedi had a baby. When he discovers information about the baby, he goes to Thebedis shed to see for himself if the information was true he was hearing. When he gets to the shed he gets a glimpse of the baby first hand He struggled for a moment with a grimace of tears, anger, and selfpity. He said, You havent been near the house with it? (Clugston, 2010). By his antiphon after the discovery that the two of them produced a intent for the period of their prohibited affair, demonstrates just how much he recognized, the fact that such thing would not be accepted within his society. As the story g oes on Paulus comes back to the shed where Thebedi and the newborn lived and it stated She thought she heard small grunts from the hut, the kind of infant grunt that indicates a full stomach, a deep sleep. later a time, long or short she did not know, he came out and walked away with plodding stride (his fathers gait) out of sight, towards his fathers house (Clugston, 2010). As the reader reads on the reader develops the understanding that Paulus murdered the newborn that day when he went back to Thebedis shed. The baby was not fed during the night and although she kept telling Njabulo it was sleeping, he saw for himself in the morning that it was dead.He comforted her with words and caresses. She did not cry but simply sat, staring at the door (Clugston, 2010). After interpretating this part of the story conveys to me that Paulus was actually fearful that the public would find out about the relationship between the two and tries to cover it up as if nothing ever happened between t he two of them. Which shows you how difficult life must have been back then with the racial discriminations. At the very end of this story the police had dug up the baby and brought charges against Paulus for murder. Thebedi up on the stand said She cried hysterically in the witness box, saying yes, yes (the gilt hoop earrings swung in her ears), she saw the criminate pouring liquid into the babys mouth. She said he had threatened to shoot her if she told anyone (Clugston, 2010). Over a year had gone by when Thebedi returned to the court house but this time she told the court that she said she had not seen what the white man did in the house (Clugston, 2010). Because of her testimony The verdict on the accused was not guilty(Clugston, 2010).

Fashion Blogging - the Impact on Sales Essay Example for Free

Fashion Blogging the Impact on Sales EssayThus, we first look into whether blogging natural process leads to (differential) securities industry come out of the closetcomes. We then examine whether managerial communication (magazines advertising) and blogging atomic number 18 synergistic. We assemble a crotchety data set from fashion containing commercialize outcomes ( gross sales), upstart media (blogs) and tralatitious media (magazines advertising) for a rat of vesture, and a smear of enclothe. Each category has at least whizz produce launch during the duration of our sample limits. We specify a simultaneous equation log-linear system for market outcomes and the intensity level of blogs. Our results suggest that blogs are predictive of market outcomes, new and handed-down media act synergistically, pre-launch magazines advertising spurs blogging activity but become less proceedingive post-launch and that market outcomes shed or so effect on blogging. We find detailed support for whatsoever of these findings via a grotesque and novel text mining epitome. We discuss the managerial implications of our findings.I-Introduction Consumer generated media (CGM) such as blogs (a contraction of the term Web logs) have witnessed explosive growth in the last few years. For example, the number of blogs worldwide is estimated to be 184 gazillions with a readership of 346 million (March 2010). In contrast, in March 2003, the number of blogs was essentially zero. Other types of CGM have also seen similar growth patterns, e. g. , Facebook, which started in February 2004, now has nearly four hundred million members worldwide (February 2011).There are also indications that blogs are now being seen as similar to mainstream media sites the number of blog sites in the top one C most popular sites (blogs and mainstream media) worldwide was twenty-two in 2008 and blogs were being viewed by consumers as sites for news, information, gossip etc. (2008). In 2010, four of the top ten cheer sites were blogs (March 2010). It is clear from these statistics that thither is considerable activity (multi- media posting, blogging, visits, traffic etc. ) on the part of consumers. However, an important question, from a managerial perspective, is whether this activity leads to (differential) business outcomes such as sales or profits. In addition, little is known somewhat the kin among handed-down or old media (where the company dissipate a craps case and delivers it to consumers) and consumer generated, or new, media (where consumers create content and there in an exchange of this content between another(prenominal) consumers and potentially, the company). That is, are there any synergies between new media and old media? In this research, we take the first step towards answering these questions. Blogging is perhaps the most established and largest form of consumer generated media at this point in time. The total worldwide viewership o f blogs is estimated to be about 346 million (March 2010). Wikipedia defines as a blog as a Web site, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are comm lonesome(prenominal) displayed in reverse-chronological order. Blogging is a worldwide phenomenon with the two biggest blogging markets being the United States and Japan. The number of blogs in the United States is about 23 million (about 12% of all US lucre characterrs) and about 8 million in Japan (about 5% of all Nipponese Internet mappingrs) in 2009. However, if one examines the total number of posts by lecture, Japanese language posts account for 37% of all posts worldwide followed closely by English language posts at 36%. Finally, readership of blogs in these two markets is ery high about half of all Internet users in the US and about one-fifth of all Japanese Internet users have read a blog in the past year. durat ion there are many informal opinions on the effectiveness of CGM in general (and blogs in particular) vis-a-vis market outcomes, there is limited confirmable research that sheds light on this issue, especially for the launch of new yields. The majority of the alive research has emphasised on online chatter (newsgroup postings, reviews and ratings) and its effect on market outcomes. There is some evidence that script of online user ratings is positively correlated to sales.Blogging, on the other hand, has been seen as a unique type of user generated content as being a highly personal, non-directed communication tool. As Kumar (2005) note, blogs are unique for sociological reasons they comprise a highly dynamic, temporal community structure that focuses heavily on local community interactions and for technical reasons blogs offer us a ready-made view of evolution (of content) in continuous time. In addition, blogging activity was probably the most pervasive CGM activity on th e web during the time of our data. presumptuousness these unique characteristics of blogs as opposed to reviews, it is not obvious that bloggers activity should affect market outcomes. Surprisingly, there is rattling little research that has tried to quantify the effect of blogs on market outcomes, especially in the presence of conventional media and/or an examination of pre- and post-launch changes in the role of old and new media. Two recent empirical papers have focused on blogs and market outcomes. Dhar and Chang (2009) explore the relationship between music album sales (imputed via sales ranks on Amazon. om) and online chatter (as seen in blogs and on social networks). Using 108 music albums in early 2007 (before four weeks and afterwardward four weeks of their release), they find a positive correlation between some(prenominal) the number of blogs and Myspace member intensity with future music sales. Gruhl (2005) propose a new methodology to automatically generate a query of blog keywords to light upon spikes in Amazon. coms book sales rank. They conclude that their new algorithm could adequately predict the changes and spikes of future sales ranks. Thus, while these two studies suggest that there may be a correlation between blogging activity and market outcomes, they do not use actual sales data but only sales ranks from Amazon. com. To the best of our knowledge, the second issue that we outline above the positive relationship between traditional media and new media has not been investigated in the literature. Our expectation is that there will be a positive correlation between the quantity of traditional media and new media as traditional media is likely to provide discussion materials for bloggers. From a managerial perspective this issue is crucial, as managers have no direct control over CGM (blogs in our case). However, if there is indeed a synergistic relationship between traditional media, which are under managerial control, and new media, which are outside managerial control, then managers can leverage this relationship. Specifically, they can carry out better resource allocation and media planning (to traditional media) as they can take the spillover effect (from traditional to new media) into consideration. We examine the role of new media with appraise to market outcomes as well as the relationship between new media and traditional media using data of two different clothing and shoes brand that are both promoted in fashion blogs. We consider the number of units sold, customers or subscribers (all a proxy for demand) as market outcomes, blogs as representations of consumer generated media and magazines advertising as traditional media. We specify a simultaneous equation regulate that links sales to advertising and blogs as well as a model that links blogs to advertising. Our results, after controlling for many temporal and cross-sectional factors, suggest that first, the volume of Blogstock ( cumulative sum of pas t blog posts) is positively correlated with market outcomes (volume of clothing sold, and the volume of shoes sold) post launch. Second, the interaction between blogs and magazines advertising has a positive effect on market outcomes. Third, we also find that traditional media (magazines advertising) positively affects new media (the volume of blogs) pre launch. In other words, bloggers consume advertising, independent of the product, and this ncreases their blogging activity. Finally, we find that the effect of blogs varies between pre and post launch. In general, the positive relationship between magazines advertising and the volume of blogs pre-launch becomes weaker after launch. This result suggests that while magazines advertising can independently increase blogging pre-launch via the provision of information and content, post-launch (i. e. , once the product is functional), consumers may rely less on traditional media, leading to a much weaker relationship between new and old media at that point. These last three sets of results shed light on the possibility that, broadly speaking, advertising and blogs act synergistically (with the relationship changing somewhat post-launch). The process explanations for our findings is not obvious. We take the first step in eliciting process explanations by carrying out a novel text mining analysis of the blog posts for the two markets (shoes and clothing) for which we have access to the textual content data. The findings from the text mining analysis suggest that blogs may affect market outcomes as they represent a rich source of product information and consumer opinion for other consumers. Also, bloggers do use advertising as a subject for blogging pre-launch but turn their attention to product attributes post-launch. II-Data Our data come from fashion market. We consider data from two brands clothing and shoes. We first tell apart the market outcome data for each product market and then we describe the measurement of traditional and new media. III-Market Outcomes The daily sales of clothings were made available for the total fashion market based on a nationally representative consumer panel. The data include daily sales of two new pieces of clothing introduced in the occlusive from January 2013 to March 2013. For shoes, the outcome variable we use is based on the same principle. We have data of two new models that were released (launched) in the period from January 2013 to March 2013. IV-Traditional Media The traditional merchandising variable we use is magazines advertising. This was measured in units of daily or monthly Gross Rating Points (GRPs). There are some diversions in the patterns of magazines advertising pre and post launch across the two brands. For clothing, most of the advertising is post launch. Typically, commercial ads in this market begin to air about five days pre launch and then the heavier advertising kicks in post launch. In contrast, for shoes, pre-release magazines GR Ps are larger (on average) than the post-release magazines GRPs. Specifically, peak advertising for shoes was, not surprisingly, a week before its launch date in order to generate high demand at the time of the opening. V-New Media We obtain blogging data from blog 1 (www. leblogdebetty. com) for clothing data and blog 2 (www. sorayabakhtiar. com) for the shoes data. Both the brands scan and index the two blogging sites on a daily basis using keywords with reportage of about 64% of all blog articles. They then aggregate the data and provide the count of the daily number of blogs that mention a particular keyword on a specific temporal period such as day or month (multiple mentions in the same temporal unit are counted as one). As is typical for most blogs, its contents appear in a reversal chronological order and also include the bloggers profile, trackbacks (links showing other websites, typically other blogs, that a blog is linked to), and comments.Buzz Research archives the conten ts of all blog posts. It also carries out lexical analysis of the contents of each tracked blog by using a proprietary text- mining method and classifies each blog as positive, negative and/or neutral with respect to a given keyword. We indeed have access to the actual content of all posts as well as the daily voice of positive, negative and neutral blogs for the movies and cellular phone service markets. There is big increase in the average number of blogs per period post launch in all two brands.Interestingly, for the two brands markets where we have valence data, the biggest growth is in the percentage of neutral blogs post launch. To illustrate the relationship between marketing outcomes and both traditional and new media, we pick a product across our two brand markets. The figure suggests that magazines advertising, blog volume and shoes buyer are temporally correlated. Dividing the data temporally at the date of release we see that magazines GRPs and the number of blogs exhi bit an increasing trend pre-release, but a decreasing one post-release. firearm we illustrate a typical data pattern through this example, the pattern is not identical for all brands across product markets. In conclusion, these data are novel in the sense that they combine marketing data for both traditional and new media along with market outcomes from a market where new media have proven to be important (at least in terms of activity). Our data are also novel in the sense that they enable us to focus on new product launches. In addition, the fact that we have data from two different brand markets (frequently purchased consumer goods) with varying characteristics (e. . , more versus fewer new product launches) will help us determine if the relationship between market outcomes and new media as well as the relationship between new media and traditional media generalizes across product markets. Finally, the availability of the actual blog post text (for two categories) opens up the po ssibility to conduct a deeper text-mining analysis. VI-Managerial Implications So far, we have discussed the findings strictly from a statistical point of view. However, it may be useful to translate these findings in a manner that uantifies the effect sizes from a managerial point of view. We therefore ran two experiments the first to get a sense of how managers could change resource allocation and the second to see how managers could use blog data to improve sales forecasts. In the first experiment, we use the estimates from the clothing market data. To illustrate short-term effects, in the experiment, we assumed there were only three periods, two in the pre-release and one in the post-release. Recall that blogging is outside the control of managers. We therefore used the marketing instrument under managerial control in our data set traditional magazines advertising. In the experiment, we increased the Adstock by one percent in the first pre-release period. The output we measure d was the percentage increase in the size of the daily volume sold in the post-release period. A ten percent increase in the Adstock results in a 3. 3 percent increase in the number of blogs at the second pre-release period. As a result of this increase in the Adstock, we find that the net increase in the sales volume is 2. 1 percent.A decomposition reaction of this overall increase due to traditional media versus new media suggested that the increase in the Adstock directly enhances the sales by 0. 13 percent while the interaction between blogging and advertising increases the sales by 0. 1 percent. Furthermore, the largest and most significant increase in the sales volume at post-launch is led by the indirect involve from advertising via blogging activity, which accounts for 1. 9 percent. Similar experiment for the other product markets also support these findings with the overall effect being slightly smaller for shoes (0. 4%). In addition to simulating the short-term effects o f advertising, we use a simulation setting similar to the above experiments and expand the time horizon from one period to ten periods. The largest indirect effect of the ten percent increase in Adstock decays slower than do the other two effects across two product categories. The peaks of the indirect effects are located at the third period for the clothing and at the second period for the shoes. These are resulted from the larger estimates of the carry-over constants ofAdstock and Blogstock at post-launch in the blog equations. In the second experiment, we hold out the last observation from each brand and re-estimated the model. We then use the model estimates for prediction and computed the difference in the predicted value and the actual data across all the held out observations. We do this for the full model and a restricted version of the full model where the response coefficients for the number of blogs and the cumulative number of blogs were set to zero. Thus, the difference in prediction (based on the Root Mean Square Deviation) between these two models shows the completion to which the use of blog data can improve sales forecasts. The improvement in RMSD is rattling high for shoes, and modest for clothing. VII-Conclusion, Limitations and Directions for Future Research This paper adds to the very limited, but rapidly growing field of research into the effectiveness of new media, especially in the case of new product launches.Using a unique dataset from two product markets (a major new media market), we are able to combine into a single source, data on market outcomes, traditional media (magazines advertising) and new media (volume and content of blogs). We used a simultaneous equation model to capture the effect of new media on market outcomes and the effect of market outcomes on new media. While this in itself is somewhat novel, we were also able to include the major marketing activity (mgazines advertising) in both equations, both directly and via interactions. Thus this allows us to investigate two open questions in this domain (a) whether new media (blogging activity in our case) leads to (differential) market outcomes and (b) whether traditional marketing actions (i. e. , magazines advertising) and new media act synergistically. We also make a first attempt, to the best of our knowledge, to use the content of the blog posts to shed process light on our econometric findings via a careful and methodical text mining analysis.Using data from clothing, and shoes brands, we find that patterns across the two categories showing clear linkages between traditional media, new media and market outcomes. In general, we find that cumulative blogs (Blogstock) are predictive of market outcomes, blogs and magazines advertising act synergistically, pre-launch advertising spurs blogging activity (that is predictive of marketing activity) but becomes less effective in inducing blogging activity post- launch and market outcomes also do have so me effect on blogging activity. Our text mining results provide additional support for some of these findings. From a managerial point of view, in the experiment using clothing estimation results, we find that a one percent increase in the traditional marketing instrument (magazines advertising) leads to a median increase in market outcomes of 0. 2%, with a majority of the increase coming from the increase in blogging activity generated by the advertising pre-launch.Our analyses do also have a few limitations (driven mostly by the nature of the data). First, as noted earlier, the aggregate nature of our data makes it very hard to offer micro-level causal explanations of the effectiveness of new media and the synergistic relationship between new and traditional media. While our text mining analyses shed some light on our findings, it would be very beneficial to obtain datasets that link individual activity to market outcomes for a larger variety of new media.Second, our measures of ne w media are at present limited to blog content volume and in two product markets, keywords and valence. ). Third, our model could be improved with the potential use of non-parametric models to model the effects of both old and new media and the associated interactions. Finally, our data do not contain information on all marketing instruments and hence we use proxies (such as lagged sales in the case of distribution). We hope that with better data, future research will be able to address these limitations.

Working Practices for Child Protection

Working Practices for Child ProtectionChristine StanescuAnalyse the working practices that ar wanted to ensure that adults and children are protectedChildren are full of naught and curiosity about their environment. When they are excited about a new experience, or see something they want to do, children may not think about every possible risks or dangers. We need to be able to recognise the challenges to the rubber eraser and well- universe of children and young people how we work with, and help to minimise the risks, without taking apart from the excitement of their activities.Any consideration should hurt clear polices and procedures about all aspects of Heath and impregnablety. All populate and equipment used by children and young people should redeem regular impairments to ensure that everything is working well and is safe. most of this checks are required by law, for example, for electrical equipment moldiness be go over by a measure up electrician every year.nurser y managers should make sure that health and restrainive checks are carried out as required. In a case of an accident, failure to check equipment could have serious implications. Many items that are used every day have been tested for safety by the British Standards Institution. An item with a BSI sum that has independently tested and confirmed that the product complies with the relevant standard and safe and reliable.Supervision is key way in which we send word keep children safe. Everyone who is responsible for children mustiness know where they are and what they are doing at all times. Sometimes, adults perceive that supervision is about stoping children from doing things, but it fire similarly be viewed positively, often supervised children can be encouraged to do more interesting and challenging activities. At the start of a session, some settings can become very busy. Parents may be dropping their children off, sometimes with siblings, and adults in the setting may be s tretched because they are keeping an eye on the children who are already thither while at the akin time greeting children and their parents who are arriving. To avoid children wandering out, or staff not knowing which children have arrived, it is essential that all settings must have a register. Up-to-date register is essential in case there is a fire and must importantly to ensure that staff child circumscribe are correct. It is important that we look for ways of reminding parents not to keep doors open or to let out any children other than their own. This is itself may not be adequate and so many settings also have doorbells or buzzers that indicate when a door has been left open or is being held open.In the same way that we must create systems to help children on arrival, so we must think about childrens safety as they leave the setting. Many of the systems that are redact in nonplus for when children arrive should also be noteed when children leave. It is essential that ch ildren are not released into the treat of someone who is not their parent or carer unless prior notification, sort of written, has ben given by the childs parent.Physical activities is essential for children of all ages as it helps to strengthen many parts of the clay including to heart, lungs, bones and muscle. Physical action at law is also cogitate to childrens need for stimulation. What children eat and drink has a important effect on childrens health. Children should have a majority of their calorie and nutrient intake at repast times. To help adult plan meal, the Food Standards Agency has produced the eatwell plate. This can be useful when considering the composition of a healthy meal. great deal moistening is an essential activity that children need to learn. It needs to become part of the material care routine so that children automatically wash their hands after going to the toilet, before meals and after conveying outdoors. The setting should have writing provision for accident records head lice sickness medication administration consent for, and the recording of, medicine administration function hygienics sun safetySome children have ongoing medical defines or infections that are controlled by medication and so parents may ask to be administrate medicines. As medicines are a potential hazard procedures should be put in place to ensure that correct dosages are given and they are kept out of reach of children when not being administered. For any complains that arise as a result of an incident, correct and full documentation is imperative for both children and staff alike.Explain the various Heath and safety requirements needed for children attending the setting at the various different stages of child developmentHealth and safety in the babys room environment requires adaptation for each different age group of children that are catered for in the setting. In every nursery, there are, in virtually circumstances, different rooms allocated fo r the various age groups enrolled. For example babies for 6 weeks to 12 months young toddler for 12months to 2 years older toddlers for 2 years to 3 years pre-school for 3 years up to 5 years.Health and safety for babies in the nursery setting is concerned with scrupulous hygiene and a safe and secure room with clean, comfortable cots which are conform to the British Safety Standards. The baby room differs others in the nursery, as is a environment where many nurseries seek to create a home experience for the baby. This is achieved by incorporating homely furniture, mobile and brightly coloured posters. The health and safety implication for babies are concerned with hygiene, specially surrounding the preparation of formula milk, nappy changing and application of barrier cream.Care must be taken by staff when making up baby milk to follow the instruction for making, storing and use of the made up milk.Baby milk may be made up in hand providing it is immediately cooled under runnin g water then stored under refrigeration and used at bottom 24 hours.Baby milk which has been made up in advance may be potented gently in a jug of w build up water immediately before given it to the baby. Un-finished bottles of feed must be discharged. It is very important that all the equipments used to feed and to prepare feeds for babies, has been throughly cleaned and sterilised before use. Cleaning and sterilising equipment removes harmful bacterium that could grow in the feed and make the babies ill. Some mothers who are breast-feeding their babies will bring in express milk either frozen or fresh to be used in bottles. The Department of Health recommend the following guidelines for storage up to 5 days in the main part of a fridge at 4 grade C or lower up to 2 weeks in the freezer compartment of a fridge up to 6 months in a municipal freezer at minus 18 grade C or lower.Breast milk that has been frozen can be defrosted in the fridge and can be served straight from the fridg e rather than warmed. The Heath and safety requirements for toddlers and pre-schools children different from babies, primarily because they are much more mobile and therefore different types of health and safety requirements apply.Measures to maximise protection for toddlers and pre-schoolers should include safety covers for plug sockets secured windows which prohibit toddlers attempting to climb through them shatterproof film should be fitted to windows and any glass structures within the nursery building that may pose a shattering hazard doors should contain filled safety guards to prevent children from trapping their fingers kitchen and office areas should have safety gates which remain locked to prevent memory access to dangerous areas equipment should be safety and securely stored to prevent toddlers accessing materials that may injure them equipment should be age-appropriate and safe for toddlers.Indoor rooms should be 18-21grade C to avoid children becoming too hot. In worm w eather, this temperature may be difficult to maintain and so extra fluids must be offered and children may be encourage to take off layers of clothing. The need for fresh air is about children having opportunities to breathe more oxygenated air. Indoors this means ensuring that is adequate ventilation, which also helps prevent the spread of airborne infections. Being outdoors in the fresh air seems to help children sleep and eat better. It is also means that children have access to sunlight which can support their intake of vitamins D. It is important to take measures to protect childrens skin from direct sunlight in the summer months, in order to prevent later skin cancer, but being out in the sunshine in the winter months is good for children. Light it is important to their health because it is linked to ductless gland regulation and this in turn can affect the sleeping patterns as well as the mood. The healthy development of babies and childrens brains requires that they must have opportunities for stimulation. This means providing play and activities as well as opportunities for sustained interaction and conversation with adults.Evaluate the various different procedures required to cover good hygiene within the nursery settingThe nursery setting will have a policy and detailed procedures for infection control based on the advice from the Health Protection Agency.Hand washing is now of the most important ways of controlling and spread of infections, especially that cause diarrhoea and vomiting, and respiratory disease. The recommended method is the use of liquid soap, warm water and paper towels. Always wash hands after using toilet, before eating it handling food and after handling animals. All cuts and abrasions need to be cover with waterproof dressings.Coughing and sneezing easily spread infections. Children and adults should be encourage to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue. They need to wash hands after using or disposing of tissues. Spitting sh ould be discourage.Personal protection equipment. Disposable non-powdered vinyl or latex-free CE-marked gloves and useable plastic aprons must be worn where there is a risk of splashing or contamination with blood/body fluids. Goggles should also be available for use if there is a risk of slashing to the face.Cleaning of the environment, including toys and equipment, should be frequent, thorough and follow national guidance.Head lice spread by moving from one head to another. If there is an outbreak of head lice in the setting, it is important to inform parents so that everyone can check their hear. This includes the adults. It is also advisable for hair to be tied up wheresoever possible to prevent the spread. In the case of a child with a development of a illness, they should be discharged from the nursery setting as briefly as possible. While the child is waiting to go home they should be isolated from this peers to minimise the risk of infection to other children. For a good hyg iene in the nursery, it is necessary to briefly touch upon immunisation schedules to ensure protection from childhood disease. In situation where a childs immunisation scheme is not with-it parents should be encourage to contact their GP surgery to organise the immunisation that need to be carried out.In many settings, parents provide nappies for their children. Like many areas of physical care, this will be liked to parents preferences. Nappies need to be changed promptly and regularly so that babies do not develop a rash. It is important to carefully follow the procedures in the setting for changing nappies to prevent cross-infection. Disposable gloves and aprons should be worn and then take off when finished. Role Of Women In Pride And Prejudice English Literature Essay

Role Of Women In feel And preconceived opinion English Literature Es evidenceThis phrase in all probability remains many topics related to the English association that the novel Pride and detriment represented The approval of the society, seek of wealth and thoroughly- world more(prenominal) than fuck, and the region of women. As the quotation says, all men in possession of a good fortune seek for a wife, for the reason that he wants the approval of the society, e precise(prenominal)(prenominal)thing was fair(a) about appearances. In the other hand, women did non puddle any options at that sentence, and the maxim goal or dream that they expected for their lives was to get wed, if it is realizable with a smashed man in order to view as a comfortable life story. Marriage was a market, it was based principally in economical arrangements where unfortunately, a cleaning lady did non have chance to decide for herself.Pride and Prejudice is based specifically in the ea rly 19th century under the Victorian Age. til now when a distaff representative was ruling the country, women did not have many options for their lives, they were seen as high-minded, pure and saints and as saints they had no legal rights. During this essay, role of 19th century women go out be developed, besides first of all I would to mention a bit of Jane Austen, who is the author of this fantastic and romantic novel. Secondly, life of English society in the 19th century provide be discussed, talking about nuptials and courtship. Thirdly, women role at that century will be developed, relating those with the different characters that we noticed in the book.Jane Austen was an English novelist who lived among 1775 and 1817. It is possible to find Austens works since they be actually famous and important for English literature. Her novels still remain in our century, thanks to the adaptation of several(prenominal) novels into movies, which is the case of Pride and Prejudice. That fact allows us, to rude(a) readers of her work, to feel closer to that time and century and to know how populate used to live and confront life. We have to custody in mind that Jane Austen notwithstanding of all the historical events that England was going through, for subject Napoleonic Wars, she inspired her work on women and her living conditions. Principally, that was all she knew about how herculean was to be a woman, all the pressures, injustices and prejudices that women faced.Pride and Prejudice was a novel about how cut shadow go through many awkward, hard and touchy situations and still can win after all, which is reflected in the relationship between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. Jane Austen made people believe that despite of many rules and prejudices of society there is forever something that moves the world there is always something inside of any forgiving which is pure feelings such as love. Love is like an illusion and it completes the happiness of every human being. However, in this novel it is likely possible to see all the dark side of this male- centered society. I said likely, because this story is covered with romantic scenes and love illusions, facts that every little girl would like, for example in the following quotes, where Mr. Darcy appears like a gentleman that every girl, after all, would be in love withIn sleeveless I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.- Darcy to Elizabeth. (Jane Austen 1813236)You argon too generous to trifle with me. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged, but one word from you will keep mum me on this subject for ever. Darcy to Elizabeth (Jane Austen 1813451)Nevertheless, this story was under a male-centered society, where men were the biggest favored here they could choose and take the decisions they treasured, they could earn funds and have privileges if their wives were wealthy, they could study and mold business and keep being successful. This type of thinking (male centered) kept happening even when a queen was in charge of the country. Anyways it is not many time ago that this situation started to change thanks to the bravery of women that valued a change, but that is definitely another topic.harmonize to the society in the 19th century, rule by Queen Victoria, was a society where appearances and neighborly class were really all-important(a). Money had the real power there to classify people thanks to frightful social conditions. As it is possible to notice in the book and in the movie as well, it was everything about impressing the social order with the well being and money you had, in order to form a family and to be considered for the society as somebody important, to gain respect and honor as well. Regarding women, they were seeing as ideal for the most part of society her bodies were pur e and they were labeled as saints, cleanher role was to raise children, to tend the house and they did not have legal rights, for example women could not vote and could not own a property.Talking about espousals, it can be said that it was more an economical arrangement than an institution where love was the principal issue. For many women, to get wed it was the salvation to have a comfortable life thanks to the well being that a husband can provide. Pride and prejudice reflected this situation in Charlotte Lucas caseHappiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance. If the dispositions of the parties are ever so well known to each other or ever so similar beforehand, it does not advance their felicity in the to the lowest degree. They always continue to grow sufficiently unlike afterwards to have their share of vexation and it is better to know as little as possible of the defects of the person with whom you are to pass your life. Charlotte Lucas. (Jane Austen 181327)As Charl otte said, marriage was a matter of chance, to have a better life, since a woman for itself could not own anything. Love was not important as languish as you live well and with the acceptance of society. That is why Mrs. Bennet wanted her girls to get married so soon, since the business of her life was to see all her daughters married for what? For maintain her, as well.Nevertheless, all the possessions of a woman passed to her husband at the piece to get married. To be more specific, to be a woman was very difficult you expected to be perfect and pretty and all that stuff but it was a situation where you can feel a prisoner a society prisoner. Furthermore, a woman depended, of course, of her husband and consequently, she has to obey him. It was a life little better than slavery, to say it in some way. When a woman was married and her husband was wealthy, she had to organize parties to meet new people in order to bring prestige to her husband and her family as well. Those social p arties were the opportunity to establish new economical relationships. Another point about women and marriage, it was that they must have certain knowledge in different areas to help and educate children. In addition women in Victorian Era were seen like thisSweetness is to woman what sugar is to fruit. It is her first business to be apt a sunbeam in the house, making others happy. True, she will often have a tear in her eye, but, like the bride of young Lochinvar, it must be accompanied with a smile on her lips. (Victorias past)As it is possible to notice in the quotation, women seem to be happy and perfect, but what was happening inside it might be really different, regarding to the phrase she will often have a tear in her eye. Women were really suffering, but in that harsh society nobody could ever hear them. A woman was expected to be perfect, but what about her life, her decisions, her thinking and her feelings?Nevertheless, not everything was so bad for women this era leaded some space to romanticism in term of courtships. Pride and Prejudice reflect that in its plot, a love story of a wealthy man and a myopic woman. People in England are recognized as polite, so courtship was followed by codes. Love always was under moral codes, specific ways to treat people, rules of etiquette and so on. As I said rules of etiquette were very strict, and sometimes it seem like people attitudes were not real, due to the fact that there were so many rules you do not even know if they are serious or they are playing courtship. Consequently, a woman here plays the role of being so perfect and pure, just like jewelry, even more those women belonging to upper classes, but as I have explained before these damage are possible to notice in the book, and all that code and etiquette issue. According to Victorian PastQueen Victoria and her family were role models in Victorian society. Subsequently, the perfect marriage became the socially acceptable goal of courtship. (Victorias Past).Talking about female characters of the novel and their relation with the role of woman in the society of 19th century, there is a lot that can be said. Regarding Elizabeth Bennet, she was the main character of Pride and Prejudice, being in my opinion, the bravest one. She did not mind what to say in order to express herself no matter what. She and her sisters were under the pressure of her mother in terms on seeking a husband. Elizabeth understood all the stress and difficulty of her family if she did not find a husband but despite of all the facts, she disagreed to go against her feelings, she wanted to be happy after all. When Elizabeth did not want to get married with Mr. Collins, her mother was so angry and disappointed of her, due to the fact that being single was a totally social disapproval. If a man was single, it was not seeing so badly as a woman single. At least(prenominal) a man could raise a business and find a wife so easily, but a single woman did not have opt ions. Elizabeth was not very worried about it, but her mother was.Consequently, Charlotte Lucas who was Elizabeths best friend was worried about being single. As I mentioned before, she saw marriage as an opportunity and she was conscious about the little options she had at her age. She was not in love with Mr. Collins, but she knew that in some way love may come after as long as she has a comfortable life and to feel accepted by the harsh society as well. She was very poor, and keeping with the idea, she did not have many options. Sometimes, you can feel that in these novels there is all about love, well in some way it could be, but not all the time. Love in this era was a secondary term since the society and the approval and appearances and having a respectable well being was the essential issue.Women could stay single, but only those who were very wealthy. wench Catherine was not single, but she was alone. Her husband died leaving her with a daughter. In the case if Lady Cather ine was a poor woman, all her possessions would have been under a man hands. She was very powerful and wealthy that fact allowed her to be totally independent. That was acceptable, for the society due to the fact of her social position. Everybody was worried about pleasing her just take an example the behavior of Mr. Collins. By the way, we do not have to forget that Lady Catherine was also arrange a marriage between her daughter and Mr. Darcy. In that case marriage was not about love it was just an economical relationship, just an arrangement. Nevertheless Lady Catherine, when she knew about Elizabeth and her relationship with which she wanted her daughter to get married Mr. Darcy, she was so angry, because Lady Catherine had the knowledge of the economical situation of Bennet family she thought that Elizabeth was interested just in money and to save her life economically, just to say it in some way. Do not forget that Lady Catherine belonged to the upper class, where social rest and appearance was truly important. If we talk about appearances it is essential then to mention Mrs. Bennet and Miss Bingley. Unfortunately, the role of many women was to be accepted by the society no matter how. In the case of Mrs. Bennet, she was always faking being in some ways educated and intelligent. She was very silly she always used to say to her daughters to act naturally, but that was all a false it was just to impress Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy. Mrs. Benner had the need to show herself and her family as a probable and a noble prize for wealthy men in order to arrange marriages. According to Miss Bingley, she was very snobby always worried about her image, her social standing and her prestige. She did not like the idea to be linked with people from middle class. This attitude toward life, and the fact of impressing was really superficial, she was not real at all if we compared her with Elizabeth Bennet, at least Lizzy was real. This behavior in women in 19th century was v ery common. Situations were demanding a lot of rules codes and etiquette, fake and superficiality.Another topic which was very vital was the honor to the family. The family, despite of all the false that a marriage would be was very important. It was the base of the society at that time. It was not accepted at all, for example, that a single woman escapes with a man without being married. That was the case of the younger daughter of Bennets family Lydia Bennet. She committed a mistake that was very horrifying for her family, she run off with Wickham. Since, the English nicety was all male-centered, men could do anything they wanted, they could have many affairs or being free, just as simple as that. However, if a young girl acted like Lydia did, that fact would bring many bad consequences to her family. Bennets family would have loss the prestige at all if people would know that one of the daughters escape with a man. Nowadays, that situation would not matter, because peoples minds have changed, but in that era people in general were all close minded.Regarding Jane Bennet, what can be said, is that she was the ideal woman. She was respectful, discrete, resplendent and she had grace. Even though Jane belonged to a middle class family, she never made a mistake that put into risk her familys prestige. She was in love with Mr. Bingley, a marriage which was seen for most of the people as something economical, but they really were in love. Janes attitude towards life represented the romanticism that women lived in that era, even more if they were into a courtship. Even though, Jane as well as Elizabeth knew about the real intentions of her silly and snobby mother, Jane was real. She was in love at least, and she was very lucky to be engaged and to be married later with a wealthy man Mr. Bingley. Mrs. Bennet was so pleased when she knew about this, because in some way she and her family were safe.In conclusion, Pride and Prejudice reflected the English society duri ng Victorian ages. Money used to rule the world, in terms of shaping and labeling people into social classes. Appearances were really essential at the moment to establish different kinds of relationships. As a male-centered society, women were the basis of the family, but they did not have voice or vote. Her options were pretty limited by the rules code compel by the people. Role of women were really different as we can notice actually. They were pure but with no rights. Life seemed to be really unfair for them and that was what Jane Austen wanted us to think about. Even when Pride and Prejudice was a novel about love and how it can go through many barriers, women had a very poor role. During the novel and the story reveled, we can see several type of women single women, married, powerful and poor. All of them had something in common how difficult was for them to face life in general. Sometimes society and codes restricted them to be real and to fight for a fair life. Jane Austen i n some way also showed how false is people in several situations when they tried to impress and to be accepted by the harsh English society, in order to have a comfortable and happy life. This novel make us think about women situation in nowadays, things have changed and show us that during time there were noble and brave women that wanted a change, and that women after all are strong they are the basis of the family and the basis of the society. However, nobody said that being a woman was a booming task but it is admirable how they face life.

Freedom Of Expression Vs Censorship Policy Media Essay

Freedom Of Expression Vs Censorship Policy Media EssayThat leads to the doubt Is freedom of font the opposite to censorship indemnity? Based on my understanding in Broadcasting Act 1988, Ive to disagree with the statement because freedom of carriage and censorship insurance atomic number 18 both essential to a countrys development and growth. Censorship policy is a necessity to media because confine that are published through and through the media must ceaselessly be checked and filtered in order to prevent harmful and misleading contents to reach the public. Examples are sex-related scenes, violence and gore scenes, and few to the extent of causing racial controversy among the people. It is true that the contents found in media are not 100% true and authentic However if in like manner much truth and info are exposed to the public, then how certain are we that the public are ready to accept all the facts?Secondly, freedom of expression is essential for a democratic country t o grow and develop succeedingly with come out of the closet the abuse of power. Freedom of expression also allow different views and opinions to be voiced out to the public and a country such as Malaysia that has citizens of diverse race, religion, and finale bear share their beliefs and be much aware. In addition, freedom of expression has many a(prenominal) beneficial effects to society. Freedom of expression also opens opportunity for citizens to take part in decision making of the country such as the rights to vote. Furthermore, citizens seat voice out their thoughts and opinion freely without being judged. We refer to freedom of expression rather than freedom of speech because it is more accurately conveyed that it does not charter to be words that is said but by the acts that we did. However, freedom of expression may cause harm to others and if it is not controlled properly, libel and slander might legislate and conflict will happen. A good example will be the case of W ee Meng Chee aka Namewee that has caused a racial controversy by putting a video of our national anthem with racial slur in it. So this is why freedom of expression should be controlled even though it is necessary for a democratic society. As we can see, freedom of expression and censorship policy synchronizes together and a democratic country could not grow with just wizard and without the other. That boils up to the point, is all this restriction and limitation really necessary and needed? I will say its very important to be able to balance both freedom of expression and censorship policy. We need to have strong moral values in order to be able to filter contents that are useful and contents that may be harmful and malicious. We the people of the country are actually the cause of all the conflict and controversy that has happened in our nation. As long as we are not educated with proper moral values and ethics, there will always be issues regarding censorship policy and freedom e xpression. There is a saying With great power, comes great responsibility. Based on that quote, I believe that both freedom of expression and censorship policy can be a very useful tool if we were to use it wisely but it can also be a very corrosive weapon if we do not imply wisdom in using it.There must be boundaries and limitation concerning freedom of expression because more and more individual are starting to rise up and make a stand by voicing out their opinion. It is a good thing that we are able to listen and share different views and opinion. If freedom of expression is used with the intent of helping others and bringing unity then those kinds of acts and speeches should not be obstruct and restricted. A very good example pertaining to good use of freedom of expression is the issue of Martin Luther King. Quoting from his speech, he said that we should face hostility with peace. If the public can have a mature and rational thinking like Martin Luther King then freedom of ex pression can lead to a good thing. The political sympathies should control the public from delivering hate speech but they shouldnt restrict and stop the public from expressing honest opinion or we as a nation would always be distorted and blinded with lies. The case of Irene Fernandez has sparked up a very sensitive issue among the public. Irene Fernandez published a report on the living conditions of the migrant workers entitledAbuse, Torture and Dehumanized Conditions of Migrant Workers in Detention Centres and she was detained and charged for maliciously publishing false news. Do you think it is fair for a woman that merely defended the rights of migrant workers to be under the longest trial in Malaysia history?Malaysia is recognized as a democratic country with variety of races, religion, and culture and Malaysia supports freedom of expression but the charge of Irene Fernandez has bring about confusion to the public. It is said that we have the freedom of expression but the a rrest of Irene Fernandez has proven that we do not really have the freedom of expression rather it is just a cover up done by the government activity. We the people make the government so henceforth if we can grow to be a wise and developed society, then freedom of expression and censorship policy can be a channel for us to share beliefs and opinion without worrying that conflicts might spark.I will end this essay with a question. Can our voices be comprehend fairly despite all this restriction and limitation?

The Debate on Whether Alcoholism is a Disease or Not Essay -- Alcoholi

The Debate on Whether Alcoholism is a Disease or Not Many specialists today ar in a debate on whether alcoholism is a disease or not. I looked up the word disease in the advanced Ameri hatful Webster dictionary. It stated that a disease is a condition ill health, or malady. Malady is defined as any disordered state or condition. Alcoholism causes sickness and disorder. psyche who is an alcoholic has a dependency on the drug alcohol. If you are dependent on alcohol, you can acquire many ailmentes both physical and mental. Physical illness from alcoholism can include stomach problems, digestive problems, headaches, kidney problems, liver disease, problems with nervous system and trouble with immune system, just to name a few. Mental illness can include depression, anger, irritability, lack of concentration, and low self-esteem. somewhat alcoholics believe that in order to lease a good time doing something they have to be chthonic the influence of alcohol. Therefor i f they do not have alcohol then they remember life sucks and is no fun. This can also limit what a individual can do because you may not be able to do some things under the influence of alcohol with out getting a punishment. For face if you wanted to go somewhere in a car and youre an alcoholic then you will be breaking the law if you are drunk driving. Some people do not know why they have to drink in order to have fun. Maybe its because their friends drink and they do not have friends who do not drink. You can ask people, why do you drink. Many answers can come from this question. Because I like to drink, because it makes me feel good and sometimes its, I do not know. So, let us look at the reason for alcoholism. Alcoholism usually comes from years of the use of alcohol but you can hold out an alcoholic at a young age. You may not be physically dependent at a young age but you can definitely become mentally dependent. Many specialists say that alcoholism is hereditary. In alcoholics anonymous, it is said that if you have an inherited alcoholic gene then you are at high risk of being an alcoholic. One sign that you might have this gene is if you have a black out while over devour alcohol. It is said that if you black out then you are an alcoholic. A black out is a period while drinking that you can vaguely mean or not recall whatsoever. I do not believe this because there can be... ...it can definitely be defined as a disease. It is a disease that is brought on by influences of society, family and pressure. In my mind, alcoholism is a man made disease. Of course man tries to fix it but I think alcoholism is unstoppable. It may be stopped in one case but it just keeps coming. As one alcoholic recovers, there is ten new alcoholics being born. Not in the sense of a newborn baby, but in the sense as a person being defined as an alcoholic. There will always be alcoholism as long as there is alcohol. I think if society would focus more on alcohol as bein g negative, it would help stop some cases of alcoholism. I think any beer company sponsoring a sport event is ridiculous. This type of ad should be banned. I think this would make alcohol less acceptable by the public. I really do not understand why the States accepts alcohol and not one other drug. I think alcohol is the number one gateway drug out there. People do things when they are drunk that they would not regularly do sober. Someone may try doing and illegal drugs because they are drunk. So, in order to stop this disease we need to refine it at its roots and that would mean get rid of alcohol altogether.

The Debate over Same Sex Marriage Essay -- Politics Political Essays

The Debate over Same Sex Marriage economy is deeply entrenched in language and the continual process of interpretation. Laws ar created as a response to cultural and societal needs, wants and norms and ar restructured and interpreted as these desires and standards change over time. The importance of the words chosen and the syntax used in order to translate societys standards into legislation are amplified over time because they are continuously deconstructed, examined, and analyzed. As these laws are applied to and challenged by society, policymakers must examine them and then change them through discourse and dialogue. As current sentiments towards hymeneals are changing and shifting, policymakers must begin to examine our nations legislation that dictates how unification works in our country. They must attempt to create a policy that is ethical and entire which at the same time accurately represents the majoritys opinions. The issue of same-sex marriage became relevant in the recent election due to the actions of courts and local officials in both calcium and Massachusetts. President Bush proposed an Amendment that would limit marriage rights to only heterosexual couples in all states. Many government officials felt that this was unnecessary due to the success of the 1996 defense team of Marriage Act, which John Kerry, who would come to run against George W. Bush in 2004, spoke out against. The Act passed through both the House and Senate with resounding majorities. Because of the media attention of the same-sex marriage debate in this election year, constituents of both parties have examined the arguments that both Bush and Kerry have made for and against legislation which limits marriage rights. By examini... ... human element of the marriage debate, liberals like John Kerry can appeal to the section of the American population which is concerned with the preservation and expansion of a citizens rights but the conservative approach of play into the w eaknesses and fears of conservative heterosexual faction of American population, they can offer a scapegoat. Many people believe this issue was brought into the spotlight in order to forfend people from the deplorable condition of Bushs war in Iraq. It provided the conservative base an enemy against whom it could rally. It provided a cohesion to conservatives everywhere that was lost due to the state of the war. By examining the ways in which each candidate structured there argument considering same-sex marriage legislation, one can gain insight into the interplay between the two parties on a national and a personal level.
